Pilgrimage in Lviv with original icon “Our Lady Door of Mercy”

unnamedThe meeting sessions of the Synod of Ukrainian Greek Catholic Bishops closed today (10 September 2026).

The Bishops along with His Beatitude Sviatoslav went to St. George’s Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral in Lviv and celebrated a Moleben service to the Mother of God the Door of Mercy. The Father & Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church celebrated the Moleben on front of the original ancient Ukrainian icon “Our Lady Door of Mercy”. The icon was brought from the Archeparchy of Przemyśl by Metropolitan Evhen. This is the exact same icon that Pope Francis asked to be brought to Rome for the official opening of the Holy Year of Mercy.

After the Moleben the Bishops along with clergy, seminarians, nuns, monks and lay-faithful made a special pilgrimage walk with the icon “Our Lady Door of Mercy” through the city of Lviv to the new campus of the Ukrainian unnamed-1Catholic University. In solemn procession the icon along with relics of Ukrainian Martyrs were brought into the newly built University chapel of the “Holy Wisdom”. Vesper evening service was celebrated.

Tomorrow the chapel will officially be blessed and the Synod will conclude with the celebration of the Divine Liturgy. The University chapel is still being built and while the basic structure has been completed the interior decorating will now begin.
